The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) which measures children’s risk factors as they start school highlights that the City of Greater Bendigo have more children who are vulnerable with regards to their literacy and language skills than the state average. However, within City of Greater Bendigo some communities face even more challenges. Heathcote is one of these communities!
17.4% of Heathcote children need support with literacy and language development when they start school, 10.5% higher than the rest of the Bendigo region. Our children are also struggling when it comes to communication skills, 11% of Heathcote children are vulnerable and struggling, whilst in Bendigo as a whole it is 7%.
But, that is about to change Bunbunarik takes up Literacy & Language Challenge! by creating pathways for our children’s future and providing a range of activities and programs for parents, children and community members to work at reducing the level in line with the state average of 6.3%.
